It seems Microsoft are going to continue to support Internet Explorer version 6, despite it being outdated. Support will finally end for the browser in 2014, at which point it will be thirteen years old.
It is thought around 20% of users are still using Internet Explorer 6.
Some critics, mostly website developers and designers, have slammed Microsoft for this decision, creating www.ie6nomore.com. IE6NOMORE is a site dedicated to providing website developers with code that encourages Internet users to upgrade their browser before returning.
I’m almost certain that people using the aging browser have no idea how old and outdated it is, potentially only using it because automatic Windows or Microsoft update either broken, disabled or requires some kind of other human intervention.
I’ve seen it many times before, windows update needs somebody to actually initiate it, some users don’t understand the little yellow shield in the corner means updates need to be installed. I would bet the same percentage are running Windows XP service pack 1 or 2.
This is more a education issue as a support one, after all it doesn’t cost anything to upgrade, or change your browser. When I tell people to use Firefox over Internet Explorer most give me a strange look and ask “What’s Firefox?”.
